China and India are both planning to launch moon shots within a year in the latest sign of the two Asian powerhouses’ intensifying rivalry and growing technological prowess.

(CNN) — Wally Schirra, one of the original astronauts in the Mercury 7 project, died Thursday at age 84, NASA officials said. He was the only astronaut who flew in three of the nation’s pioneering space programs: Mercury, Gemini and Apollo.

The claim comes amid suspicion in Moscow that the United States is seeking to deny Russia access to an isotope in abundance under the moon’s surface that many believe could replace fossil fuels and even end the threat of global warming.
